Bill Fuhrman, above, explains the control panel wiring for electrical current to the track and Del Aire pneumatic devices used for powering turnouts.
This page is dedicated in memory of Bill Fuhrman. Bill Fuhrman's Berkshire Western RR in Bethlehem, CT was the centerpiece of a train room containing hundreds of American Flyer® "S" gauge trains and collectibles. The layout was one level with continuous operation and features a multitude of closed frog turnouts powered by Del Aire pneumatic switch machines and an abundance of original Plasticville structures. The trackwork is code .172 and was purchased by Bill from fellow club member Bill Krause in 1986. Tethered Rix handheld cab controls provide the DC current for train operation. Bill ran everything from Flyer to scale on his hirail layout.
Bill used homasote roadbed. Photo shows an AF Franklin puffing its way around the layout.
The layout featured many American Flyer operating accessories and equipment.
Bill displayed his extensive American Flyer® collection on shelves surrounding the trainroom.
Bill had a fine collection of original Plasticville structures.
This is a U.S. Army flatcar that Bill got from Doug Peck of Port Lines Hobby. Bill added the Army figures to the car to give it more of a sense of action.
Bill repainted this AF flatcar John Deere green and built the chocks to hold the tractors he bought for it. He lettered the car with S scale dry transfers.
Bill had recently created a two track operating shelf "layout" around the upper perimeter of his train room.
Here's another view of the shelf "layout." Note the trees, billboards, lighting and stuctures that Bill added to provide a more realistic view. Bill's wife Carol purchased all of the trees for about 22 cents apiece at a post Christmas sale at JoAnn Fabrics stores in western Connecticut.
Here's a wide angle view of the left end of Bill's dogbone layout.
